St. Gertude's Catholic Church October 5, 2008

On Sunday, October 5th, the Belgian-American Association, the Belgian-American Century Club, along with the Women’s Century Club celebrated their annual Memorial Mass for all deceased members at the 11:00am Celebration at St. Gertrude’s Church in St. Clair Shores.

The presidents of the parent clubs, Arsene Van Vooren, John Vanek and Debbie Palm along with the B.A.A Retirees President Frank Baecke and the B.A.A. Ladies Auxillary President Marianne Baecke preceded the mass celebrant, Father John McGreevy to the altar.

It was nice to see so many members of the various organizations in attendance. Approximately 150 people took part in the mass, which was a decrease from previous years. Al and Patty VanDenBergh, Jr. read the readings followed by a wonderful homily by Deacon Paul Lippard.

After mass, everyone went over to the gymnasium for a light lunch. The Presidents of all of the organizations read the names of their deceased within the last year, which for a pleasant change was not as large as in previous years. John Vanek served as emcee calling table numbers for lunch.

The kitchen crew from the B.A.C.C. led by Bruce Baron, Bob Dansett and Ray Claes did a great job handling the luncheon. Vice-President Dale Verhaeghe of the B.A.A took care of the liquid refreshments, except for the coffee, which he said is not his cup of tea!

All in all, it was a great day and we look forward to next year’s gathering.
