My great grandfather, Alfonse VanGoethem, who came from Belgium with his son Walter, and settled in Detroit, was given a silver medal by King Leopold II. We still have it, without understanding the meaning behind it. It says "1st Prijs" other words say"Academie Van Schoone Kunsten Der Stad Aals Antiek Beeld".
I do not speak Flemish. Does anyone know what kind of prize this is?

Let me introduce myself. My name is Charlotte Op de Beeck, and I work for the Red Star Line Museum in Antwerp, Belgium. We are searching for stories, memorabilia and photos of passengers of the Red Star Line shipping company, which travelled from Antwerp to New York between 1873 and 1934. We would like to launch an open call to your members. Do you think this is in any way possible?
The open call would look like this:
"Belgian Red Star Line Museum looking for emigrant photographs, memorabilia and stories (1873-1934, Antwerp to New York)
Between 1873 and 1934 the legendary shipping company Red Star Line transported more than two million passengers to America. Poor European emigrants in search of the American Dream, but also affluent passengers travelling for business or pleasure left for New York. They departed from the city of Antwerp (Belgium, Europe), where the port warehouses of the Red Star Line were situated.
To this day those Red Star Line warehouses are preserved. For many passengers they represented the last stop on the European mainland. It was there that, just before their departure, the emigrants travelling in third class underwent a medical examination and were disinfected, while clerks scrutinized their documents.
The Red Star Line buildings are protected monuments. They are part of the communal memory of innumerous new Americans. They had long been standing empty and were pleading for a new purpose. In the spring of 2012 the new Red Star Line Museum | People on the Move will open its doors at this historic location. It will be a place of remembrance, experience, debate and research into international mobility, both past and present. The story of Red Star Line and its passengers will be brought to life once more.
Do you have any old Red Star Line items such as postcards, luggage, diaries or photos? Are there travel stories or objects preserved in the family archive? Maybe you too can contribute to the new museum collection. Send an e-mail to redstarline@stad.antwerpen.be or call (+32)3 206 03 50. Perhaps your family item will find its way into the future museum… All tips are welcome!
More information at http://www.redstarline.be."
Looking forward to hearing from you, and many thanks in advance.
Kind regards,
Charlotte Op de Beeck

As a 3rd generation Belgian-American(half) married to a 3rd generation Belgian American (another half)I found your website very interesting. My great-grandfather worked on the Windsor Tunnel after arriving from Muelebeke, saving to send for my great grandmother and their oldest son, my grandfather, about 100 years ago. He eventually bought farm land in the Thumb area on Saginaw Bay where we still farm. While it is not possible to participate from so far away I do keep up on the BAA through your website. It is important for our children (I have 3 teenagers)to keep the Belgian heritage alive. Thanks for your efforts.

I love looking up anything Belgian on facebook and web sites. Hence, I stumbled upon yours. Seems like I find something new each time I look. So, I got a bit curious. I was wondering about my Mom. Her dad farmed in Michigan for awhile and I would love a little more info if it is possible. I am not even sure when they moved down here to the Quad Cities (Moline, Il.) Is there anywhere up in that area I can look into it? My grandfathers name was Polador De Keyzer.
My grandma was Valerie Staes De Keyzer. Thanks!!

Interesting site. Both of my parents were of Belgium heritage, one a DeLaere and the other a Verlinde, both from the Northwest section of Belgium around Tourhout (sp?). Both settled in the Lansing Michigan area and were involved with others from Belgium. I believe there may have been a Belgium club in the Lansing area back in the 1930"s and 1940"s. |

I live in Belgium. My grandfather Olli Walker Hutson was born on April 27th 1923 In Fulton, Kentucky Jackson Michigan.
During the second world war he signed in the US Army and fought at D-Day in France.
After the war he met a Franch woman (my grandmother) they got married and settled in Belgium.
They got 4 children, my dad Gilbert, my uncles William and Richard and my aunt Danielle.
Several years ago my grandfather died. Ever since my mum has been in contact with our relatives in Michigan, but since the late ninetees there has been no more contact.
Now that I have my first child myself, I would like to restore the contact.
My father found that his Dad Ollie Walker Hutson had 3 brothers William, Richard, and John and 2 Sisters May Belle and Marjorie.
Could you help me or do you know where I could adress myself.
Thanks in advance,

I am trying to find any information about my Belgium Grandparents and Father. Grandfather was Alphonse Valcke born in 1888 in Halluin, France, married Celine Blondeel, born in 1887 in Menen, Belgium. They had one child Roger Valcke born 31 Mar 1916 in Menen, Belgium. They immigrated to the US in the early 20"s. Do you have any references to any of my deceased relatives? I am trying to trace my family tree with little success. I also noted that all your members seem to be men. Is the Belgium American Club exclusively for men or may women join as well? Thank you for your consideration.

I want to compliment you on adding the "significant other"s" (aka - wife) name to the membership roster. I do not know if this was done in prior books as I have not looked in them in the past. I just picked up the 2009-2010 and as I was glancing through it, noticed the names were in it. I know Don suggested doing this years ago (the Knights of Columbus have done it for years), but the "past powers at be" veteoed his suggestion. Arsene: you seem to be approaching the club with a contemporary light..... good job!!!

What I was wondering about , is my belgian history my grandfather came to Canada in 1923, my father was born in 1925. I have spoke to one of my cousins and it seems that he would be interested in joining. Two of my other uncles were members untill they were deceased. Luie Goovearts was a member of the BAA and The Century club. My mother and father were both members of the Eastside Pigeon Club. I myself belonged to Antoons Bycicling Club and also Wolverines.
It would be great if there could be more events, like feather bowling that would be at least once a week. It would help the club financially and maybe more members will join. What we need is the younger group to keep the orginization going.
So if I have missed a few meetings, I am sorry. Hope to see every one soon.

My brother, Ken, gave me the club"s website. I am glad that the club is still going strong. I have many fond memories of the Christmas parties and picnics the club put on for the children. I do remember the old hall and how we used to run around that place! I also remember helping my parents open all the mail when it was time for the yearly dues to be paid. My dad was financial secretary for a few years. Believe it or not, I actually found it fun and interesting to look at all the marvelous Belgian names. There"s no mistaking them, and I was always proud of mine...as you can see, it was shortened considerably when I got married. Good luck in the future with the club. I live on the other side of Michigan, and if I weren"t so far away it would be fun to be part of the association. |

Dear Etienne Elskens,
I felt that the joke that you put into the bulletin about the encyclopedias for sale after you got married was very offense to women. Women may not know everything, but it was wrong what you put in the bulletin. Was that approved by the board??? I suggest that you keep those comments to yourself and do not put anything like that into the bulletin again.

Hello everyone back in Michigan. I was busy at work and stumbled onto the website. Everything is going well here in Flagstaff AZ. The scenery is great and there is so many places to go and see out here. I have so far been up to the Grand Canyon, out west to Las Vegas, stood on the corner in Winslow AZ, been offroading and sighting seeing all of the red rock area in Sedona AZ, been metal detecting for gold south of Prescott AZ, meteorite hunting around Williams AZ, riding the quads in the volcanic cinders park, sightseeing a few ghost towns, checking out old Indian ruins, underground caves, and enjoying the beautiful sunny weather, minus the humidity. Kristina and I plan on going down to Tombstone AZ, drive out to California so she can see the ocean, and make a trip to Denver CO to visit her Aunt. But we do plan on moving back sometime in 2009. Its harder than we thought to be away from family and friends. So until then, I wish all of you the best, and if you would like to contact, my email is belgiancivic@hotmail.com Have a great day and I see you at one of the meetings in the future. |

The column in the GuestBook that contains TRUE or FALSE is identifying if the GuestBook signee is a BAA member. TRUE = yes they are a member and FALSE = they are not currently a member.

It always amazes me when I see family names that are the same as out here as well as the family name of Vercruysse a relative to my husband's family with whom I stayed when visiting Belgium in 2004.

Nice job on the new website. Will be interesting to see if other Belgians from around the country might find this site and sign the guest book. Warren, MI. |

Thank You for the site. I have started researching my Belgian Roots and I hope to visit the Detroit area and find out more about the Belgian community there. |

Nice to keep intouch with my roots. Have many relatives in greater Detroit area, such as St. Clair Shores. the Leon Dewulf family being one of them. |
